ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays got one of their two injured outfielders back for the Wild Card Series against Texas that started Tuesday, with Jose Siri included on the 26-man roster and Luke Raley left off.
The Rays opted to carry only 11 pitchers for the best-of-three series, leaving off Kevin Kelly, the rookie reliever who led them in bullpen innings; and rookie starter Taj Bradley, who would have been used in a low-leverage relief role at best.
The decision on Kelly, who threw 67 innings, looked to come down to a choice of two that also included Chris Devenski and Andrew Kittredge.
The roster includes three rookie infielders: Curtis Mead, Osleivis Basabe and 20-year-old Junior Caminero, who was called up from Double A two weeks ago.
Siri, expected to start in centerfield, has been out since his right hand was fractured when hit by a pitch Sept. 11. Raley has been sidelined with a cervical strain as the result of a freak Sept. 16 collision during batting practice.
Both said after Monday’s workout they felt good and were ready to go, but the bosses didn’t feel as confident about Raley.
If the Rays had put Raley on the roster and he then had issues, he could be replaced. But he would have to miss the next round should they advance. Plus, rosters can be reset after each round.
Here is the roster:
