INDIANAPOLIS - The Rowdies played with an extra man for 70 minutes Wednesday night but couldn’t find a way to unlock the Indy Eleven’s compact defense and settled for a 0-0 tie.
Indy’s Paddy Barrett was booked for shoving Mohamed Kone of the Rowdies (4-0-5) in the 13th minute and fouled Sebastian Guenzatti seven minutes later to earn his second yellow card of the night and put his team down to 10 men.
Once Indy went down to 10, it sat deep in a shell with the ball rarely leaving its half of the field. For long stretches, it was seven Rowdies attackers going against 10 men sitting deep for Indy.
Playing their third match in eight days (including two road trips), the Rowdies posted 15 shots, but none were on target. Nearly half of those shots came from outside the box.
Indy took only seven shots but put four on target. Goalkeeper John McCarthy got his fifth shutout in nine matches.
It appeared McCarthy would be forced out of the game with an apparent arm injury in the 73rd minute after challenging Dane Kelly for a ball, but he stayed in.
The Rowdies have a week off from competition before visiting Nashville next Wednesday night for a match that will be televised on ESPN2.
