Spectrum to offer ACC Network

The ESPN-owned network debuts Aug. 22.

Barely more than a week before its Aug. 22 debut, the ACC Network has reserved a spot in thousands more bay area homes.

Charter Communications, the parent company of Spectrum, announced Wednesday that it has reached a distribution agreement with the Walt Disney Company to deliver a diverse lineup of sports, news and entertainment ― including the ACC Network ― to Spectrum customers.

Whether the network will be part of Spectrum’s basic-cable package (which includes the SEC Network) is unclear. The ACC Network, owned and operated by ESPN, broadcasts its first football game Aug. 29 when reigning national champion Clemson hosts Georgia Tech.

“Our new agreement with Charter allows us to continue serving Spectrum TV customers with the full value of the Walt Disney Television and ESPN networks, including the newly acquired FX and Nat Geo networks," Sean Breen, a Disney Media Distribution executive, said in an ESPN news release.

"ACC fans can also rest assured that they will be able to watch their favorite teams on Spectrum, one of the largest distributors across the ACC footprint, when ACC Network launches next week.”

Until Wednesday’s news, the ACC Network’s distribution deals had been limited to DirectTV, as well as some national cable providers (such as Verizon Fios) and streaming services (such as Hulu).

But at last month’s ACC Kickoff in Charlotte, N.C., ESPN senior vice-president for college networks Rosalyn Durant said more distribution announcements were expected prior to the network’s Aug. 22 debut.

“Fans have been very active lately on social media expressing their interest, asking their distributors if they’re gonna carry the network, demanding the network,” Durant said. "That’s good. ... Make your voice heard.”
