Lost in mediocrity: Another Florida State NFL prospect, Miami’s fab freshman

Cam Akers isn’t the only draft-eligible Seminole starring, and Miami quietly has one of the top freshman passers in the nation.

Eye on the NFL draft

Running back Cam Akers isn’t the only draft-eligible player starring in a rough start in Tallahassee. Marvin Wilson has the best pass-rushing grade of any defensive tackle with 16 pressures, according to Pro Football Focus. He’ll be needed to stop the run against Louisville, but his potential to get to the quarterback could help him become a first-round pick.

Stop Hawkins

Florida State needs to beat Louisville to have a chance at restarting its bowl streak. And to beat Louisville, it needs to stop Javian Hawkins. The freshman is No. 2 in the ACC in rushing (behind Akers). He’ll try to gash a Seminoles defense that allowed 100-yard rushers in each of the first two games before showing improvement in last week’s loss at Virginia.

Knights not slowing down

No. 15 UCF has scored at least 30 points in 29 consecutive games (the longest streak since the AP poll became a thing in 1936). Expect it to stretch to 30. Pitt is decent behind respected defensive mind Pat Narduzzi but has given up at least 30 points 12 times since 2017. One of those 12: UCF, which routed the Panthers 45-14 last year.

Miami’s fab freshman

It sure looks as if the Hurricanes picked the right starting quarterback in the three-man battle. Jarren Williams has yet to throw an interception in three starts, and the redshirt freshman ranks No. 12 nationally in completion percentage (73.1). Expect another big day against a Central Michigan defense that ranks outside the top 100 in opposing passing efficiency.
