UConn calls USF ‘Southern Florida’ in AAC breakup letter

Oh, and the Huskies addressed their note to the wrong USF president, too.
Leave it to UConn to drop the ball on something as easy as remembering the name of a school in your conference. (OCTAVIO JONES | Times)

As UConn prepares to exit the AAC for the Big East, leave it to the Huskies to make one more blunder on their way out the door.

Like screwing up the name of one of your colleagues and sending a breakup letter to the wrong person.

The Hartford Courant got a copy of the Huskies’ formal notice of withdrawal. The note itself, like UConn football, is overly optimistic about something that sounds reasonable (keeping a relationship with the AAC, which isn’t going to happen). And, like Randy Edsall’s program, it isn’t very interesting — except for the ending.

UConn president Susan Herbst sent the letter to AAC commissioner Mike Aresco, with copies going to the powerbrokers of every other school in the league. Herbst sent the July 1 note to USF president Judy Genshaft … who was no longer the president. She was retired as of that date, so Steve Currall was starting his first day on the job.

It gets worse. Herbst referred to USF as the University of Southern Florida. I know the Bulls never became a true rival of UConn, the way UCF did with the storied Civil ConFLiCT. But ouch.

Maybe you can look past sending the note to Genshaft instead of Currall. UConn was probably drafting the letter in the previous days, when Genshaft was still leading USF.

But calling a school that’s been in your conference since 2005 by the wrong name? For that, there is no defense.

Like 2018 UConn football.
