Terry Small back at the helm of East Lake volleyball

Matt Burns has resigned as East Lake volleyball coach 10 matches into the 2017 season, according to athletic director Kris Toscani. Toscani wrote in an email that Burns has resigned to spend time with his family and that the new coach is Terry Small.

Small is also the old coach.

Small was with the program for 15 seasons. The Eagles won the Class 5A state championship in 2010, But Small resigned after the season amid allegations of giving some student-athletes impermissible benefits. The school was eventually fined $11,250 and forced to pay the Florida High School Athletic Association $1,125 in investigative fees.

Since the 2010 season, East Lake has had five coaches, including Burns. East Lake won the Class 8A state championship in 2011 under Mike Estes.

The Eagles are currently 5-5.

Calls to both Burns and Small were not immediately returned.
