LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky freshman defensive lineman Lloyd Tubman pleaded not guilty Wednesday to first-degree rape and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing this month.
Tubman was arrested Tuesday. The charge stems from Oct. 2 and involves a female student in a campus dormitory. His preliminary hearing will be Oct. 23. First-degree rape is a felony in Kentucky and Tubman faces up 20 years in prison.
As Tubman appeared on video from Lexington-Fayette Jail, located several miles from Fayette District Court, Lexington attorney Jim Lowry entered his plea. It's routine for people being held in jail to appear via video conference.
Tubman has been suspended indefinitely by coach Mark Stoops.
EX-QB KNOCKS TIDE: Former Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron said the Crimson Tide lacks "true leaders" and insinuated that coach Nick Saban pulled back the reins on offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin during Saturday's loss at Mississippi, espn.com reported.
"Guys that, when things go bad, (say), 'Hey, let's calm everybody down, pick it back up and go back to work and get back on the right track,' " McCarron, now with the Bengals, told Tide 99.1. "I feel like when things go bad, this team struggles a little with bouncing back and making good plays."
Saban disputed that. "I don't think we played real well last week for whatever reasons," he told the radio station. "I don't know that that's all leadership. … I don't know how AJ would really know, but I don't necessarily see that as the case."
FANS PAY FOR DAMAGE: Mississippi fans responded to a crowdfunding platform, donating more than $75,000 in three hours for damage done after Saturday's win over Alabama and a fine imposed by the SEC. Athletic director Ross Bjork had asked fans to help pay for the two goalposts torn down, stadium repairs and fine.
ECU SUSPENDS THREE: No. 19 East Carolina indefinitely suspended freshman linebackers Yiannis Bowden and Markel Winters and receiver Curtis Burston after they were cited for shooting BB guns within city limits. None have played this season. The Pirates visit USF on Saturday.
