St. Louis or Stamkos? Lightning to announce new captain on Oct. 1 in St. Petersburg

The Lightning will name it's new captain Oct. 1 during an invitation-only event that had been previously scheduled at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. Prime candidates are believed to be right wing Marty St. Louis and center Steven Stamkos.

There has been much speculation who will get the gig that opened after the June buyout of captain Vinny Lecavalier.

St. Louis, 38, is the team's all-time points leader and has been a mentor to Stamkos and Lecavalier. Stamkos, 23, is Tampa Bay's best player and is expected to be the face of the franchise for years to come.

Both were alternates under Lecavalier, so there are good arguments both ways.

As for Stamkos, he has said he believes St. Louis, because of what he has done for the franchise and his longevity with Tampa Bay, "deserves a chance to wear the C." He went a bit further when he said, "If I had to put some money down, I'd put it on Marty."
