ST. PETERSBURG — A vehicle slammed into the back of a FedEx delivery truck Saturday morning, sending packages flying across the roadway, police said.

The truck that was heading northwest on Roosevelt Boulevard N toward Ulmerton Road when it broke down near Lake Carillon Drive, said St. Petersburg police spokeswoman Sandra Bentil.

Then the stationary truck was rear-ended at about 9:20 a.m. The force of the collision left a woman driving the other vehicle trapped inside it. Rescue crews had to extricate the driver using hydraulic tools.

She was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg hospital for medical treatment and is expected to survive.

Packages from the truck were left strewn on the road. A second FedEx truck arrived to collect the packages from the first truck and the ground, Bentil said.

The crash closed the westbound lanes of Roosevelt for several hours.
