St. Pete's pier to serve as backdrop for McKalip fundraiser

St. Petersburg's pier is already shaping up to be a central issue in the city's upcoming mayoral and city council elections, and next month it will be an actual backdrop for a candidate fundraiser.

State Senator Jeff Brandes and a host committee filled with other Pinellas County Republicans are holding a fundraiser for Dr. David McKalip at a restaurant on the pier on May 15. McKalip, a neurosurgeon and tea party activist, is running for the District 4 seat on the City Council that is being vacated by Councilwoman Leslie Curran. He is being challenged by Darden Rice, former president of the League of Women Voters of St. Petersburg.

The fundraiser's host committee includes Seminole Mayor Leslie Waters, former Pinellas County Commissioners Nancy Bostock and Barbara Sheen-Todd, and Pinellas GOP chairman Michael Guju, among others.
