Former Jennings Middle School teacher Bianca Goolsby sounded a clarion call last month when she quit her job with an emotional essay.

Since then, her call for greater discipline and teacher support have drawn both praise and criticism. As evidenced by her appearance on the recent Teacher Voice podcast, her intent is noble.
The real question? How the Hillsborough school district should respond. Simple: honesty, transparency and empathy.
Too often, district officials tout positives, then undermine critics like Goolsby instead of taking ownership of a troubling issue.
The district has victories worthy of attention, but it must strive to provide for every student, not just the majority.
Febreze can cover up a pungent odor, but platitudes can't mask a persistent problem.
Ask any teacher — it's classroom discipline. It's an issue that should concern us all, but the district can't call on parents and the community to help without an admission of need. …
