This weekend is pretty much the Super Bowl for shopping events. And it's not just the mall or big box stores anymore.

Local businesses are in on the action, too. Here's a breakdown of ways to keep it local.

Black Friday

If your taste runs toward the dark side, and you really hate malls, visit Dysfunctional Grace on Friday and Saturday for Kaufrausch, the sale for "weird people who don't like to get up at 3 a.m." House of Epicurious will be there putting your scandalous messages on its cuffs, "disturbing" fashion designer Jason Gronvold will screen-print limited-edition one-off designs, and the shop will offer major discounts on its inventory of oddities, taxidermy and other funky stuff. 11 a.m.-7 p.m. 1903 E Seventh Ave., Ybor City. (813) 842-0830.

Small Business Saturday

There are so many wonderful small businesses to support on this day, but my pick this year is local lifestyle brand Sunshine State. The Clearwater-based company has captured the surf, skate and coastal culture of Florida to perfection. They'll have a Sip and Shop from 9 a.m. to noon featuring holiday discounts, new designs from the Fall 2018 line and a popup of Jeva Lab activewear with 10 percent discounts on their one-of-a-kind designs. Plus, coffee, mimosas and snacks. My kind of Saturday morning. 1799 N Clearwater-Largo Road. (310) 871-1910.

Museum Store Sunday

We're so fortunate to have a number of fabulous museum stores. The Dalí Museum's store is pretty epic, with everything from iconic Dalí merchandise to the work of local artists, like Chad Mize's Mr. Sun Dalí design on T-shirts and dresses. The store is blowing it out all weekend with 10 percent discounts on Saturday, a free tote with purchases totaling $75 or more on Sunday and 20 percent discounts online on Monday. 1 Dalí Blvd., St. Petersburg. (727) 623-4720.

Cyber Monday

How can you keep it local for Cyber Monday, you ask? Local venues including Clearwater's Ruth Eckerd Hall and the Capitol Theatre ( and St. Petersburg's Mahaffey Theater ( will be offering hot deals on tickets. The venues hadn't released the details at press time, but it would be smart to get on their email contact list. And for other experiential discounts on Monday, save on sensory deprivation by visiting float center St. Pete Salt Works' website,

Giving Tuesday

After a weekend of materialism, won't it feel virtuous to pick a local charity or nonprofit to donate to? I suggest Kind Mouse, a local charity that supports families in transition and their chronically hungry children by providing meals. If you can't afford to donate, consider volunteering. No one should ever go hungry.
