  1. Things to Do

Top things to do this week: Tampa Theatre BeerFest, Metrocon, #MomTruths, swimsuit bar crawl

Tampa Theatre's annual movie-themed fundraiser, BeerFest, has produced parties with tongue-in-cheek themes like Barley's Angels, the Brews Brothers and Hoppy Gilmore. This year it's "Hop Gun," and partygoers are encouraged to dress up in the Top Gun theme. You'll hear lots of cries of "I feel the need … the need for mead." It will be a Mach 2 evening of craft beers and local brewers, plus snacks and samples from local restaurants, including Ava, Roux and Ella's Americana Folk Art Cafe. Though the theme may be silly, funds benefit the ongoing preservation and educational programs at the historic movie palace. A limited-capacity premium sampling begins at 7 p.m. Saturday ($65-$70), and the "grand sampling" begins at 8. ($40-$45). 711 Franklin St., Tampa. tampatheatre.org.

Best known for their viral #MomTruths videos and very funny weekly Facebook Live shows, Cat and Nat take the stage Sunday for the Fun Show at Ferguson Hall at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. With seven kids between them, the duo are notorious for talking about the things moms are thinking but never saying, like "Children to their mother are as close as it would be to have an actual stalker." 7 p.m. 1010 N MacInnes Place, Tampa. $39.50-$49.50. With the heat getting more relentless as summer yawns on, a bar crawl could be miserable. So on Saturday Ybor City is cooling things off with a bar crawl called Sun, Swimsuits and Suds. Put on your swimsuit and check in at Crowbar at 1:30 p.m. The crawl will hit Ybor area pubs and restaurants with water fun along the way, including squirt guns, kiddie pools and splash zones. An after-party back at Crowbar at 6:30 p.m. will have a summer-themed costume contest and music by the Bangarang Band and Rising Down. 1812 N 17th St., Tampa. $25-$30 (includes free drink, towel and swag), $10 after-party only. The focus of Metrocon is anime, the style of flashy Japanese animation and artwork familiar to anyone who has seen Speed Racer or Sailor Moon. But the event covers all elements of pop culture that have been influenced by anime, from video games to pop music to games like Pokémon and Yu-Gi-Oh. There will also be a human anime chess match, a fire show along the Riverwalk and loads of panels. Voice actors scheduled to appear include J Michael Tatum (Samurai 7), Jamie Marchi (Borderlands 2, Smite) and Jason Marsden (Hocus Pocus, Lion King 2). It opens Thursday at noon and runs through Sunday at the Tampa Convention Center, 333 S Franklin St. $30-$40 single-day pass. metroconventions.com.
