Volunteers sought to have hair braided during performance

St. Petersburg's Museum of Fine Arts is looking for volunteers to have their hair braided during artist Jono Vaughan's performance called Over, Under, Over: Intertwined Experiences in a Transgender Age on Aug. 20. The collaboration between Vaughan, pictured; hairstylist Moriah Fleeting and volunteers at least 18 years old with shoulder-length hair will be from 6-8 p.m. as part of the museum's series Uncharted: Random Acts of Culture. Admission to the museum is $5 at that time, as it usually is after 5 p.m. on Thursdays. "The spaces in which hair-based activities traditionally occur (the salon, the barber shop, and the home) often become infused with political and cultural conversations," says a news release from the MFA. "Vaughan's performance builds upon this history by inviting volunteers to sit and have their hair braided while conversing with the artist about the unacceptably high rate of murder affecting the transgender community in the United States." There are 10 time slots open during the performance, and each will be 10 minutes long. To volunteer, contact museum associate curator of public programs Mary Szaroleta: mary@fine-arts.org or call (727) 896-2667, ext. 220. The deadline to volunteer is Aug. 18.— Sharon Kennedy Wynne, Times staff writer
