'Bye Bye Birdie' comes out on top in Richey Suncoast Theatre's Charlie Awards

NEW PORT RICHEY — The musical comedy Bye Bye Birdie was the big winner at the 2015 Charlie Awards ceremony Saturday at Richey Suncoast Theatre, picking up six awards in the musicals division. In the plays division, the farce Whose Wives Are They Anyway? won four awards.

Named in honor of the late Charlie Skelton, winners are chosen by a numerically weighted vote of those who attend the shows. Awards are given in 13 categories, seven in musicals and six in plays.

There were 14 winners this year because of a tie vote for Favorite Female Support in a Musical, one to Dandy Blethroad as the comically overbearing, possessive mama, Mrs. Peterson, in Birdie, the other to Suzanne Meck as the spunky Margy Frake in State Fair.

Other winners were the comedy The Dixie Swim Club, with two, and the musical State Fair, also with two. The only shutout was the season opener, The Pajama Game, but five of the actors in that show won Charlies for performances in other shows.

In addition, 11 appreciation awards were presented to volunteers who work behind the scenes: Larry Shapiro, Roger Kleemichen, Kevin Wykoff, Dale and Phyllis Collins, Trina Brown, Emily Greene, Emmy Brazier, Suzanne Meck, Carol Corson and Karen Traetow.
