Things To Do

Top things to do this weekend Eddie Izzard, A Night at the Museum, birding and nature festival, Sesame Street Live and more

TRANSFORMER: Eddie Izzard

The iconic standup comedian, actor and “action transvestite” who broke the mold by performing in makeup and heels, Eddie Izzard defies categorization again by adapting his bestselling memoir into a stage show. Believe Me: A Memoir of Love, Death and Jazz Chickens is not exactly an outright standup comedy act. He instead tends to spin wildly funny tales about his life with actorly flourishes of storytelling (while sporting thigh-high boots) and he welcomes an audience Q&A. He performs at Sarasota’s Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall at 8 p.m. Thursday and at 8 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 N McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $35-$75. (727) 791-7400. rutheckerdhall.com.

HISTRIONICS: A Night at the Museum

As the Tampa Bay History Center winds down for the day, the museum comes alive with pirates, explorers, Florida pioneers and even the stormtroopers from Star Wars for A Night at the Museum. Families are invited to haunt the center while they trick-or-treat their way through the museum and collect candy from historical and fictional characters come to life. The Tampa Bay Ghostbusters and Star Wars characters from the 501st Legion will also join the fun. There’s a kids silent disco, costume contest, crafts and games. This year brings two sessions on Sunday, 1:30-3:30 p.m. and 4:30-6:30 p.m. $12, $10 children. 801 Old Water St., Tampa. (813) 228-0097. tampabayhistorycenter.org.

FLOCK TOGETHER: Florida Birding and Nature Festival

Just in time for Central Florida’s peak bird migration period, the Florida Birding and Nature Festival returns to the Brandon campus of Hillsborough Community College for four days of expos, talks, seminars and field trips. It kicks off Thursday with a talk by Jack E. Davis, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea, as the keynote speaker. Expos and seminars are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, with one last field trip from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Gardeners will be interested in the Saturday seminar series Birding Your Garden, with tips on landscaping for birds and wildlife. $25 per day, $40 for all. 10414 E Columbus Drive, Tampa. fbnfestival.org.

SUNNY DAY: Sesame Street Live

Favorite preschool pals Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird and more will take the stage at the Yuengling Center (formerly University of South Florida Sun Dome) for the brand-new stage show Sesame Street Live! Make Your Magic. Four performances will tell the tale of a magician’s visit to Sesame Street, and Elmo wants to become part of the show. He has to discover the “power of yet,” that perseverance and practice do pay off. $15-$65. 4202 E Fowler Ave., Tampa. 6 p.m. Friday, 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Saturday, 10:30 a.m. Sunday. sesamestreetlive.com.

ON STAGE THIS WEEK: The Play That Goes Wrong

The Play That Goes Wrong, a play about a play --†a beleaguered production of a 1920s murder mystery --†subjects the Cornley University Drama Society to nonstop series of tough breaks. Actors take pratfalls. Sets collapse. Characters yell “Stop the show!” so many times, the cast had to invent safe words for the real thing.†“We have a Tony-winning set that likes to behave in outrageous ways that we don’t always have a ton of control over,” said†Evan Alexander Smith, who plays Inspector Detective Carter. “A lot of dropping from high levels, a lot of rolling on the ground. It’s a very physical show for all of us and no one gets out unscathed.” Runs Tuesday through Oct. 21 at the David A. Straz Jr. Center for the Performing Arts, 1010 N MacInnes Place, Tampa. $51 and up. (813) 229-7827. For showtimes, go to strazcenter.org.†
