Two new deans will join the University of Tampa in early June, the college announced Wednesday.

Paul Greenwood will lead the College of Natural and Health Sciences, and David Gudelunas will lead the College of Arts and Letters.

Greenwood comes to Tampa from Colby College in Maine, where he is a professor of biology and once served as senior associate provost and dean of the faculty.

"I have had a long commitment to experiential education and engaged student inquiry, and UT is very well known for its particular excellence in those areas," he said in a news release.

In his new role, he'll oversee several departments: biology; chemistry, biochemistry and physics; health sciences and human performance; nursing; and sport management.

Gudelunas, a professor of communication at Fairfield University in Connecticut, has served Fairfield in many roles, including as chair of the communication department, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and director of women, gender and sexuality studies. He was also the founding director of the Fairfield's School of Communication, Arts and Media.

"The value of the arts, humanities and communication in contributing to cultural and information literacy, media competency, critical thinking and the full expression of human potential is increasingly self-apparent," Gudelunas said in a news release. "And I think the UT College of Arts and Letters is well positioned to be a leader at this particular cultural moment."

He'll oversee the departments of art; communication, English and writing; languages and linguistics; music; philosophy and religion; and speech, theatre and dance.

Greenwood's research focuses on nematocysts, the stinging structures found in jellyfish, sea anemones and similar creatures. Specifically, he examines nematocysts' development, biochemistry and discharge physiology.

Gudelunas' research examines emerging media and media history, critical and cultural studies, and gender, sexuality and communication.

Both deans begin June 1.
