Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg: The 15th edition of this annual opening race for the IndyCar series takes place in the streets of downtown St. Petersburg on the 1.8-mile long waterfront course with 14 turns. 7:30 a.m. North Straub Park, Fifth Avenue NE and Bayshore Drive, St. Petersburg. $20 today; $35 Saturday; $50 Sunday; three days $55. Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg 5K: This 5K follows the track of the race cars. Register online at gpstpete5k.com. Proceeds benefit the Police Athletic League and its numerous programs for children. The course will follow a route through downtown St. Petersburg entering and exiting the Firestone Grand Prix track’s layout at Turn 9 near Central Avenue and Pioneer Park. 6 p.m.
