A few hours before the Bulls football team made its 2016 debut Saturday, the volleyball team made history.
The Bulls' three-set sweep of Stetson, on the final day of the USF Invitational at the Sun Dome, gave them their first 6-0 start since 2000.
USF, 11-21 a year ago, has surrendered only two sets so far this season.
"We haven't moved the lineup around very much, so it's been pretty consistent, and I think that's helpful in the chemistry piece of our game," Bulls coach Courtney Draper said. "Alex (Mendoza) being our only setter right now, the quarterback doesn't change. It stays steady and consistent."
Senior OH Dakota Hampton, named co-MVP of the Invitational, had 17 kills against the Hatters while Mendoza added 33 assists. Mendoza and junior OH Denise Belcher (five digs, four kills) made the all-tournament team.
"It definitely shows how hard we've been working all preseason and all summer," said Mendoza, who traveled with the Bulls on a 12-day European tour earlier this summer. "It's just showing on the court, so it's definitely gratifying to have a record like this to start off."
The Bulls seek their seventh consecutive win Friday in Chicago against DePaul. The 2000 team is the only Bulls squad in at least 40 years to begin a season 7-0 (School records from the late '70s don't include some early-season scores.).
