As Tropical Storm Gordon continues to move north-northwest through the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday, the Tampa Bay area won't see much of the storm's effects, according to forecasters at the National Weather Service. But Tampa Bay will still see plenty of rain as an abundance of moisture and westerly winds will continue to carry storms into the area by late afternoon to evening.

Gordon is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it moves through gulf waters before it's predicted to make landfall in the next 24 hours.

Tampa Bay was fortunate as much of the rain associated with the tropical storm has been well off the coast, said Rodney Wynn, a meteorologist with the weather service in Ruskin.

"Basically, all the rain that's associated with the tropical storm is being pulled away from us right now," Wynn said. "The storm's already in the north-central portion of the Gulf of Mexico at the moment and those storms will continue pulling north-northwest over the next 12 hours while Gordon moves on."

EXTENDED FORECAST: The 10-day outlook for the Tampa Bay area

While the tropical storm approaches the Gulf Coast, Tampa Bay will continue with a standard summertime pattern. A western-flowing wind will push storms brewing off of the East Coast into the Tampa Bay area by the late afternoon to evening throughout the week.

Afternoon highs will reach 91 with mostly cloudy skies and a 50 percent chance of rain. Many of those storms will continue into the evening before dissipating overnight, with lows in the mid 70s under partly cloudy skies.

Expect similar conditions on Wednesday, but with an even higher rain chance, forecasters said.
