Oh, hail no! The rare weather phenomenon that took Tampa Bay by storm

Folks across Florida and in the Tampa Bay recorded hail as it pelted their windows, roofs and property while Tuesday's severe storm rushed through the area.

To celebrate the end of winter and the beginning of spring, Mother Nature decided to give the Tampa Bay an icy surprise.

But instead of snow falling from the sky, Floridians got rain and hail.

A cold front pushed severe storms through the Tampa Bay area on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in nearly 3 inches of rain, strong wind gusts that closed the Sunshine Skyway Bridge at one point in the afternoon ... and ice falling from the sky.

The storm didn't last very long, but it still managed to knock out power for thousands of Duke Energy customers in Pinellas. A lightning strike caused a fire in St Petersburg, and the weather delayed more than 100 into Tampa.

But it was the pelting sound of hail that got everyone's attention on Tuesday.

The storm traveled across the state at a rapid pace, shedding hail to even those on the east coast of Florida. From Tampa to Daytona Beach, hail showered the state.

The hail pretty much melted within hours, but for that short time it almost felt like snow. A sad, kind of painful snow, shrouded in rain.

That Tuesday started overcast, with thunder and hail in the afternoon, and then sprang to beach weather by the evening — proving that Florida really doesn't play by any rules.

Welcome, Spring! Nice to see that you're still not following the rules, Florida! ??? #firstdayofspring #SpringBreak #hail #coldfront pic.twitter.com/sVNwcz0l4r

What a way to bring in the spring season, don't you think?
