With Colby Rasmus coming, someone must be going off Rays roster

With the Rays set to (finally) make official their one-year deal with free-agent OF Colby Rasmus in the next few days, they will have to make room on their 40-man roster.

Having already added 14 new faces, their options to make room without dispatching one of the additions or core players are narrowing.

Here are four ways they could make room:

DFA RHP Eddie Gamboa. Knuckleballer finally saw major-league action in 2016 at age 32, but while an intriguing option, would have a limited role in the big-league bullpen and won't touch the Rays rotation.

DFA RHP Ryan Garton. Mitchell High product, who worked his way up from being a 34th round pick and came through the Rays velocity building program, made it to the majors for the first time in 2016 and did well, going 1-2, 4.35 in 37 games, but does not have a 2017 spot secured.

Trade RHP Erasmo Ramirez. A starter in 2015 and a reliever in 2016, Ramirez provides versatilty that can be valuable. But an arbitration-avoiding salary of $3.125-million may look like too much, especially for a set-up as best role. Overuse in the first half last season left him fatigued and less effective in the second.

DFA OF Jason Coats. The Rays just claimed Coats last week from the White Sox, and like the fact that he has some right-handed power and options, providing depth at Triple-A if they do have an injury.
