NAPLES — In a game between two teams that had never met with a lot on the line, the Naples defense came up with one of its best efforts against Largo on Friday night. The Golden Eagles limited the Packers to 117 yards of offense in a 24-0 triumph in the Region 6A semifinals at Naples High School's Staver Field.Naples (9-1) will face Fort Myers or North Fort Myers in the 6A championship game next Friday.Quavon Matthews led Largo with 46 yards rushing."Naples played a great game, but they didn't do anything we haven't seen before or didn't expect," said Largo coach Marcus Paschal. "It was just that we lacked execution. We played them tough for three quarters before it got out of hand."Cesare Mellusi paced the Golden Eagles offense with 143 yards rushing and a touchdown.Just like the Packers' playoff win over Barron Collier last week, Paschal figured his team might stage a comeback Friday."We were in the same situation last week, being down late before clawing back to win," Paschal said. "We thought we'd do it again this week. But we couldn't execute for anything. And when you don't execute at this time of year, you're probably done."The Golden Eagles led 7-0 after 36 minutes, then put up three scores in the final quarter. The first quarter was scoreless. The Golden Eagles missed on a chance to score late in the first when, on fourth and 1, Packers defensive end Isaiah Bellamy stuffed quarterback Jordan Persad-Tirone for no gain at the Largo 18-yard line. That was pretty much the best opportunity either side had for points.Three minutes into the second, Naples took over near midfield and drove swiftly. Persad-Tirone scored on a 1-yard sneak to put the Golden Eagles up 7-0 with 5:14 left until halftime. The scoring drive was highlighted by Persad-Tirone's 20-yard run.Largo turned away a scoring threat late in the first half. Matthews recovered a fumble inside the Packers 10-yard line and returned it 67 yards. But with time running out in the half the Packers, with no timeouts, failed to get off a short field goal. With its second possession of the second half, the Packers crossed midfield for the first time. But on fourth down at the Naples 39-yard line, Naples safety Wooby Theory returned an interception to the Packers' 42-yard line. From there, the Golden Eagles moved to the 10-yard line and, early in the fourth, Hugh Wilkinson's 27-yard field goal put Naples ahead 10-0.The key to the drive was a Mellusi 6-yard run on third down at Largo's 36-yard line late in the third.Largo quarterback Kyle Wiesnieski was intercepted in the fourth by D'Andre St. Jean.Mellusi and Persad-Tirone put it away with touchdown runs late in the fourth.
