David Peoples of Orlando, who led every round, collected his first victory as a professional Saturday, setting a Kapalua International tournament record in the process. Closing with a round of 5-under-par 66, Peoples finished the $700,000 event at 264, 20 under par and five shots better than Davis Love III. The previous record at the Bay Course was 266, set in 1984 by Sandy Lyle and tied in 1988 by Bob Gilder. Peoples started the final day with a three-shot lead, and Love briefly closed it to two with a birdie at the third hole. Peoples responded by chipping in from 35 feet for a birdie on the next hole and was never seriously threatened again. The victory earned him $150,000, his biggest check ever. Peoples, 30, has been through the PGA Tour qualifying school nine times. Until this year, his best money season was 1989, when he earned $82,624. This year he won $259,367 with five top-10 finishes, not counting the $150,000 winner's check because the Kapalua tournament is not an official tour event. Other tournaments Du Pont Cup Seniors: U.S. senior golfers won all four two-man best-ball matches against their Japanese counterparts and took a two-point lead after two rounds at Batoh, Japan. Dale Douglas and Charles Coody shot the day's best score of 61. Today's final round will consist of singles stroke-play with 16 points at stake.
