The Florida Marlins have landed a Tampa Bay television outlet. WTMV-Ch. 32 has agreed to televise the Marlins' full 52-game over-the-air package, team spokesman Chuck Pool said Wednesday. The Lakeland-Tampa-Orlando station is the first radio or TV station in the Tampa Bay area to agree to take on the Marlins. There has been a concern among area stations because of potential viewer and/or advertiser backlash. "I think in the beginning that was something we were worried about," WTMV programing director Joe Pauly said. "Back around the 10th of November, when the announcement (that the Giants were staying in San Francisco) was first made, we might have seen a different reaction then. "But baseball is baseball. The fans want to see it. Only time will tell, but we certainly hope the fans support it." Last season, independent Ch.32 aired a package of about 100 major-league games, picking up telecasts from a variety of teams. Another Tampa Bay station, Ch.38, aired other games. But under Major League Baseball rules, the Tampa Bay market is part of the expansion team's exclusive territory for local broadcasts. The rule does not affect games on national networks or superstations. "Under the rules it's either this or not do baseball," Pool said. The team also announced broadcast deals Wednesday with stations in West Palm Beach, Pensacola and Mobile, Ala. Jay Randolph and former All-Star Gary Carter will be the announcers. Around the majors Indians: First baseman Paul Sorrento, who hit .269 with 18 home runs and 60 RBI in his first season as a regular, signed a $2.1-million, three-year contract. Marlins: Reliever Joe Klink, 10-3 with Oakland in 1991 but out all last season with an elbow injury, signed a minor-league deal. Royals: Outfielder Hubie Brooks and reliever Frank DiPino agreed to minor-league contracts. _ Material from the Associated Press was used in this report.
