A sixth-grade teacher who started working this year at Bing Elementary School has been accused of fondling an 11-year-old female student during school. Craig Stephen Bevan, 37, of Clearwater was arrested Dec. 7 and charged with one count of committing a lewd and lascivious act. Bing is a sixth-grade center at 6409 36th Ave. S, south of Tampa. The investigation started in late October after the girl told her mother that Bevan fondled her twice. Bevan is accused of touching the 11-year-old in the crotch during class Oct. 20. Other students were in the classroom, but Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter said she did not know if anyone saw what happened. The next day, Bevan allegedly grabbed the same girl's buttocks while she was walking up a flight of stairs at the school, according to jail records. Carter said that the girl told her mother about both incidents and that school officials contacted the Sheriff's Office. Bevan was removed from the classroom when the investigation began, said David Binnie, assistant superintendent in charge of personnel. Tuesday night, the Hillsborough School Board voted to suspend Bevan without pay until the charge against him is resolved. As is routine in such cases, Bevan could be fired if convict-ed or reinstated if found innocent. Bevan declined to comment on the charge when reached at his home Wednesday. Bevan, whose bail was set at $1,000, posted bond a few hours after his arrest, Carter said. According to his resume, Bevan worked in schools in Michigan and Ohio before coming to Florida. In Florida he worked in the Glades County school district and in Pinellas County schools. In Pinellas he worked as a substitute teacher in 1990, according to his personnel file. Bevan began working at Bing Elementary in August. _ Staff writer Amelia Davis contributed to this report.
