Aug. 20: Former Chiefs wide receiver Tim Barnett sentenced to three years in prison for the second-degree sexual assault of a 14-year-old girl. Aug. 20: Five North Carolina State football players charged with breaking into the apartment of a basketball player and assaulting his teammate and a woman, police said. The incident apparently was a dispute over the woman, who was dating one of the players. Aug. 15: Miami recruit Gary Thompkins denied admission to the university after being accused of hitting his girlfriend a month earlier. July 31: Sports Illustrated details the problem of athletes and domestic violence. It says that in the past three years, the list of those involved in domestic violence includes baseball players Dante Bichette, Barry Bonds, Jose Canseco and Darryl Strawberry, hockey's Mark Fitzpatrick and golfer John Daly. It also tells the story of Nancy Saad, who says her husband, NBA star Robert Parish, physically abused her throughout their 10-year relationship, including a 1987 beating that left her hospitalized. July 29: Florida defensive end Johnie Church charged with battery after his wife told police he grabbed her by the throat. July 19: Vikings quarter- back Warren Moon accused of striking and choking his wife; she declines to file charges but Texas officials decide to prosecute. May 19: Chicago Bulls forward Scottie Pippen charged with two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery. Charges dropped when his former fiancee fails to appear for the trial. May 7: Braves manager Bobby Cox charged with simple battery after his wife said he struck her, according to a police report. His wife later said he did not strike her and the charge is dropped. May 3: Florida defensive back Teako Brown charged with aggravated battery after allegedly knocking down his pregnant girlfriend.
