BRAVES: INF-OF Hensley Meulens was released. OF Damon Hollins and INFs Randall Simon and Marty Malloy were optioned to Triple-A Richmond, and LHP Ray King and C Mike Mahoney were sent to the minor-league camp.
CUBS: OF Robin Jennings was ejected by umpire Bob Davidson after arguing his strikeout in the ninth, but manager Jim Riggleman didn't think it was an example of an umpire having an especially quick hook in the wake of last season's Roberto Alomar spitting incident. "Robin just said the wrong thing and Bob threw him out," Riggleman said. "You can't argue balls and strikes. That's the rule."
GIANTS: A bill to speed up construction of a new baseball stadium was passed by the Appropriations Committee, but it likely faces problems on the California Assembly floor. Republican Gov. Pete Wilson is opposed to it.
MARLINS: Rookie LHP Tony Saunders, 22, won the fifth spot in the rotation over veterans Mark Hutton and Rick Helling. Saunders has never pitched above Double A, whereas Hutton and Helling combined for 13 starts and a 7-2 record with a 2.81 ERA for Florida last season. "When you look at our overall staff, I believe in my heart this is the way to go," manager Jim Leyland said. Saunders will make his major-league debut in the fifth game of the season against the Reds April 5. Hutton and Helling will begin the season in the bullpen.
ROCKIES: RHP Jamey Wright, who had not allowed an earned run in 6 innings, gave up five earned runs in five innings and took the loss as the Giants won 9-3.
