Ken Dryden's summerlong search for a Maple Leafs general manager ended when he looked into a mirror two weeks ago. He spent the past two weeks selecting helpers for his four-headed management team. "This is not management by committee," Dryden, the team's president and now general manager, team, said Wednesday in a news conference at Maple Leaf Gardens. Dryden's group, which he called a "hockey management team," includes: + Bill Watters, a former assistant GM who becomes assistant to the president. He continues negotiating player contracts and managing the St. John's American Hockey League farm club. + Mike Smith, former general manager of the defunct Winnipeg Jets, who becomes associate GM. He's in charge of scouting other NHL teams and talking trades with them. + Anders Hedberg, previously the Maple Leafs' chief European scout based in Stockholm, who moves to Toronto to be assistant GM in charge of amateur scouting and player development. Dryden deflected questions that suggested there might be too many bosses at the Gardens. RANGERS: D Alexei Vasiliev, New York's fourth-round pick in the 1995 draft, agreed to undisclosed terms. OFFICIALS' CONTRACT: The Officials' Association agreed on the central terms of a collective-bargaining agreement to run through the 2000-2001 season. The officials agreed to participate in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
