Bengals running back Ki-Jana Carter decided against having surgery for a torn rotator cuff and will try to play the rest of the season, the team said. Carter, the top overall pick in the 1995 draft out of Penn State, was examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. He agreed with the results of an examination by team physicians that showed a torn left rotator cuff. Had he undergone for surgery, Carter most likely would have missed the remainder of the season. "No one knows at this point whether the pain and weakness in the shoulder will allow him to play," Bengals head trainer Paul Sparling said. "But he wants to give it a try and both doctors have agreed that's not unreasonable." According to Sparling, Carter will begin "an aggressive rotator cuff rehab program" today. He won't play in Sunday's game against the New York Jets and is listed as questionable for the Oct. 5 game at Jacksonville. Carter, who has rushed for 202 yards on 42 carries this season, has had a sore shoulder since training camp and aggravated the injury after falling hard on it in Sunday's game at Denver.
