Colin Montgomerie held on to beat Davis Love III 2-up in Sunday's 36-hole match-play final of the Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf. The $1-million check matched Montgomerie's biggest payday. He won the 1996 Nedbank Million Dollar Challenge in South Africa. Love, who never led after the 13th hole and was 4-down with four holes to play, halved his deficit with a 10-foot birdie putt on No. 33 and a 25-footer on No. 34. Montgomerie then three-putted for bogey on No. 35 for a 1-up lead heading into the final hole _ the par-5 18th where Love hit the flagstick in Saturday's semifinals to beat Japan's Hajime Meshiai. This time, Love pulled his second shot left and was 60 feet from the pin and Montgomerie lofted his 7-iron shot within 10 feet. "I've made better shots and closer ones, but in the realm of pressure, that ranks up there as one of my best," Montgomerie said. Love's putt curved left and went past the cup by 10 feet and he conceded the match. Tampa's Mock shoots 73, wins Invitational ST. PETERSBURG _ Kevin Mock of Tampa, wearing a Bucs cap and shirt, made a 3-foot birdie putt on the final hole on his way to a three-shot victory in the 72nd annual New Year's Invitational at Lakewood Country Club. Mock, a sophomore at the University of North Florida, shot rounds of 75-68-73-73 for 1-over 289 and a three-stroke victory over college teammate Matt Borchert of Orlando and 54-hole co-leader Jeff Klauk of Ponte Vedra Beach, a sophomore at Florida Southern. Borchert forced a playoff for second by shooting 1-under 71. He beat Klauk with a birdie on the second hole. Although Mock won by three strokes, he led Klauk by only one shot after 16 holes. On the par-3 17th, Mock hit the green in regulation. Klauk came up short, chipped 12 feet past the cup, then two-putted for bogey to fall two back. Mock left the door open slightly on the par-5 18th by hooking his tee shot into a fairway bunker, but Klauk drove into the right rough. Mock picked the ball out of the sand with a 5-iron to within 85 yards of the pin, then hit his best shot of the day _ a pitch to within 3 feet for the birdie to secure the victory. "My confidence wasn't that high coming into this tournament," Mock said, "but I tried not to overdo my aggressive style of play and tried not to react to what my opponent was doing. It's great to win the same tournament that Buddy Alexander and Scott Hoch have won." In the senior division, St. Petersburg's Phil Leckey beat defending champion Gerry Maxfield of Aiken, S.C., by three shots.
