Miami allowed 134 points in its final three games last season, and now Bill Miller is looking for a job. Coach Butch Davis fired Miller, the team's defensive coordinator the past four seasons. "It was time to go in a different direction," Davis said in a statement. While Miller said the move Thursday caught him by surprise, he noted: "We didn't play very well the last few games of the year, and I take full responsibility for it." The Hurricanes allowed 24 rushing touchdowns in 1997 and 20 passing touchdowns in 1998, both school records. In the final two regular-season games against Syracuse and UCLA, Miami gave up 1,068 yards and 111 points. "The bottom line in this business is to produce, and it's my responsibility how we played," Miller said. Davis said he'll begin interviewing candidates to replace Miller at the end of the month. BYU: Running back Ronney Jenkins has been released from his scholarship and is free to transfer to a Division I-AA school and play this fall. South Florida is among those recruiting Jenkins, who had 1,307 rushing yards and 349 receiving yards as a sophomore in 1998. Jenkins was expelled from the school after violating its honor code for a second time. Before releasing him, though, BYU changed his status to "withdrawn" so he could play in 1999. An NCAA rule states that if an athlete is suspended for disciplinary reasons he or she is ineligible to compete at any other university for one season. The Deseret News of Salt Lake City has reported Jenkins may be leaning toward Cal-State Northridge, which is close to his Oxnard, Calif., home. Other top candidates include USF and Montana. GEORGIA: Volunteers secondary coach Kevin Ramsey was hired as defensive coordinator. He replaces Joe Kines, who was named assistant coach. MICHIGAN: One of three players allegedly involved in a fight at a fraternity party said he has been suspended from school. Jason Brooks, 20, told the Ann Arbor News in a story Friday that he received a letter Thursday from the school's student affairs office placing him on "emergency suspension." Police said Brooks and fellow players Ray Jackson and Will Peterson were involved in a Jan. 8 fight at a party at the Sigma Chi fraternity. Police said the altercation started after Brooks allegedly was caught stealing items from the house. NEBRASKA: Bobby Newcombe said he will remain at the school as QB, despite reports to the contrary. CANTON TECH: Former NFL coach Lou Saban, 77, who started the program four years ago, will leave next season. Assistant coach Mark Raymond will be offered the job next season. _ Staff writer Sharon Ginn contributed to this report.
