Runners race up the pedestrian ramp to cross the new Clearwater Memorial Causeway bridge Saturday morning. The race, celebrating the completion of the bridge, went across the bridge and back along the pedestrian path, starting and ending near the Harborview Center. The $69.3-million, 2,340-foot-long, 74-foot-tall span opened to traffic Aug. 18. Clearwater officials could have delayed that opening to coincide with a grand ceremony they had initially slated for Saturday, but it would have cost the city an extra $160,000; they opted for a lower-key event instead.
