This popular Japanese retailer just opened a Clearwater store

CLEARWATER — Daiso, the popular Japanese retailer known for a variety of affordable and ever-changing products, has officially opened its doors at Countryside Centre, directly across from Countryside Mall.Inside the new 5,500-square-foot location, aisles are stocked with a wide range of products, from colorful stationery and unique kitchenware to Japanese snacks and beauty items. The store, which celebrated its grand opening Sept. 13, is the third in Florida and part of a broader, rapid expansion across the state.The store’s extensive product selection and affordable pricing are what set it apart, said Southeast area manager Michael Roman.“We are unique because we’re straight from Japan, we’re a value-driven store,” said Roman, explaining that the company’s goal is to “introduce their values to America.”The store offers items with prices ranging “anywhere from $2.25 all the way to $18,” Roman said. The commitment to value is central to the company’s business model, which Roman says is what makes it stand out from competitors.“You go to any other retailer right now, and for the most part, they keep raising prices across the board,” Roman said, while Daiso has been “pretty steady on our prices.”The business began in 1972 as a mobile street vending shop started by founder Hirotake Yano, according to the company’s official history. Yano chose to sell all products for a flat 100 yen to streamline sales. This pricing strategy proved to be so successful that it became the foundation of the business, which was formally established as Daiso Industries in 1977. Since then, the company has expanded globally.The main categories of products are “food, stationery, makeup and kitchenwares,” explained Roman. A significant part of the shopping experience is the constantly changing inventory, a key factor in keeping customers engaged. Roman said the store receives “anywhere from 1,000 to 2,000 new SKUs each month.” This consistent influx of new products ensures that customers encounter fresh and often unexpected items on every visit.The rapid rotation is what Roman believes differentiates Daiso from other big-box and dollar stores. He specifically pointed to the current Halloween collection as an example of the unique product line.“You go to retailers across America, it’s usually the same stuff every single year,” Roman said. “The cool thing about Daiso is we’re introducing their line from Japan,” including items like figurines and decorations. “It’s a lot of unique stuff that most people won’t see.” While the store does not offer returns or exchanges unless a product is severely defective, Roman highlighted that the store does offer regular promotions.“We run monthly promos, so, yes, we do sales,” he said, citing past promotions like “buy two, get 50% off” on certain items. Roman believes that the sheer value of the products is what will most surprise a first-time shopper.Roman enthusiastically spoke about the store’s reception in the community, sharing that the mayor attended the grand opening and that turnout from the community was “huge.”The new Clearwater store is a critical piece of Daiso’s accelerated growth in Florida.“Everybody loves Daiso in Florida,” Roman said. The first store in the state opened in Tampa in February, followed by a Miami location on Sept. 6, just one week before the Clearwater opening.The company has no plans to slow down, with Roman confirming that two more stores are set to open in Miami in January and February. He noted that while the Tampa store is nearly double the size of the one in Clearwater, both locations receive a high volume of similar products.The new Daiso will hold a special promotion where, for a limited time only, the first 200 customers will receive an exclusive tote bag with a $20 purchase starting at 9 a.m. each day on Saturday and Sunday.The new store is located at Countryside Centre, 26583 U.S. Highway 19 N. Store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays.
