The Amazon distribution center in Lakeland is up and running. The online retailer said Thursday that it shipped its first order out of the fulfillment center to a customer in New York. It was a CreativeWater 2-Tier Buffet Server.The shipment came a few days after Amazon welcomed more than 400 full-time employees to the 1-million-square-foot facility. Employees will pick, pack and ship larger items to customers.The Lakeland center is the first Amazon warehouse to open in Florida. The second, in Ruskin in Hillsborough County, is scheduled to open soon and will process orders of smaller items, such as books and CDs. No opening date has been set.
