SPRING HILL — Two young men are in jail after admitting to stealing 19 laptops from Powell Middle School earlier this month, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.Justin Hopkins, 21, and Brandon Pestana, 22 — former students at the school — face one count each of burglary of an unoccupied structure and remained in jail Monday. Deputies said they stole the laptops, worth about $9,500, from a classroom on July 7.Investigators found Pestana Friday at his home at 11383 Newington Ave. He gave them a "full confession" and confirmed that a suspect photo captured from school surveillance video released last week was him, deputies said.Pestana led detectives to his bedroom, where they found five laptops. The 14 others were found behind the school, along the Suncoast Trail, soon after the crime. Deputies said all will be returned to the school.Investigators found Hopkins Saturday at his home at 8419 Valmora St. Upon their arrival, he fled on foot. A Sheriff's Office dog tracked him, and he was arrested before admitting to "knowledge of the burglary," deputies said.Pestana has no criminal history in Hernando. Hopkins, however, was arrested in 2016 for violation of probation following a marijuana possession charge in Indian River County, according to Sheriff's Office records. He was arrested again in 2018 for unarmed robbery and underage possession of liquor.Both men were in the Hernando County Detention Center Monday on $5,000 bond.
