SPRING HILL — Hernando County investigators are asking the public for help identifying a person deputies suspect stole more than a dozen laptops from a school over the weekend.Fourteen computers taken from inside Powell Middle School, 4100 Barclay Ave., were found undamaged by a passerby in a nearby wooded area off Suncoast Trail on Saturday. An inventory check by school staff found four more are still missing, school district spokesperson Karen Jordan said Monday.Although deputies are unsure how the thief got into the school, investigators found multiple windows there unlocked, Sheriff's Office spokesperson Michael Terry said. Jordan said Bill Hall, the district's director of fire, safety and security, has completed a campus walk-through, reviewed school surveillance footage and is continuing to work with custodians to ensure there are no other unknown points of access.Screenshots of the surveillance video, which were released by the Sheriff's Office Monday, show the suspect: A younger, white male with short, dark brown hair. He's wearing khaki pants and a black v-neck shirt, and appears to be sitting in a chair inside a classroom or library. In one of the two photos, he's looking directly at the camera.Although security cameras didn't catch the theft, Terry said, the person in the photos is the Sheriff's Office's primary person of interest because "he didn't have any reason to be in the school at that time."Citing the ongoing investigation, Terry declined to provide additional details on the case. However, he said deputies are continuing to canvas the school, conduct interviews and process physical evidence."We'll put (fingerprints) through the computer system to look for people who are known to us," he said, "but other than that we're looking for tips from the public about who this individual is."
