TAMPA — After Maurice Garrett crashed his pickup into a tree Nov. 20 in east Tampa, someone swiped his cellphone from the driver's seat.On the way to the hospital, paramedics found three puncture wounds, made by bullets, under Garrett's right arm. He later died.Tampa police later found the phone, and saw that all of the incoming and outgoing phone numbers had been deleted from the call history. The only number that remained was one to which Garrett sent a single text message 12 minutes before he was shot."Down da St," it read.Those details were outlined in a search warrant filed Wednesday in Hillsborough Circuit Court as detectives seek to obtain Garrett's call history from the victim's cell phone provider.Garrett crashed his truck about 2:10 p.m. that Friday at N 40th and E Ellicott streets. Call logs from Tampa Fire Rescue indicated that rescue personnel believed he had crashed after having a seizure, according to the warrant.Police investigating the crash noticed him bleeding from under his arm. Later that day, emergency room staff at Tampa General Hospital confirmed that the punctures were gunshot wounds, the warrant stated.Detectives learned the phone was missing after Garrett's girlfriend told police she had spoken with him on the phone just before the crash, according to the warrant. Someone later returned the phone to the girlfriend, who gave it to Garrett's grandmother, who then gave it to officers.Witnesses told police Garrett, 29, made money selling marijuana, according to the warrant.
