Bondi: Trump's new agenda will make America even stronger than before

Among other issues, Republicans and Democrats should come together to support the White House as it works to lower the costs of health care and prescription drugs for all Americans.

The state of our union was already strong after two years of his presidency, but President Donald Trump just outlined an agenda that will make us even stronger. During his State of the Union address on Tuesday, the president touted policies that will help America prosper for years to come.

"Together, we can break decades of political stalemate," the president said. "We can bridge old divisions, heal old wounds, build new coalitions, forge new solutions, and unlock the extraordinary promise of America's future. The decision is ours to make."

The president urged both sides of the aisle to negotiate and compromise on everything from immigration to health care. "There is a new opportunity in American politics, if only we have the courage, together, to seize it," the president said. "Victory is not winning for our party. Victory is winning for our country."

The Trump administration has made enormous strides to protect American workers from unfair competition, and the president rightfully urged Congress to pass the United States Reciprocal Trade Act and approve the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) that he negotiated to replace NAFTA.

He also asked Congress to give the executive branch the authority to immediately respond whenever our trade partners try to take advantage of us. "Tonight, I am also asking you to pass the United States Reciprocal Trade Act, so that if another country places an unfair tariff on an American product, we can charge them the exact same tariff on the same product that they sell to us," the president told Congress.

President Trump also emphasized the importance of rebuilding American communities that have long been abandoned by politicians in Washington. By urging lawmakers to produce an infrastructure package, the president demonstrated his desire to invest in a vital national priority that politicians from both political parties have historically supported. Specifically, he noted that he is eager to work with lawmakers on infrastructure legislation, including "investments in the cutting edge industries of the future."

Republicans and Democrats should also come together to support the White House as it works to lower the costs of health care and prescription drugs for all Americans. As President Trump pointed out on Tuesday, the cost of health care and prescription drugs in the United States is out of control, leading to prices that many Americans simply can't afford.

Most importantly, however, the president reiterated his commitment to immigration reform, urging the Democrats to finally negotiate a meaningful compromise on border security instead of obstructing his agenda.

The president urged Congress to "create an immigration system that protects the lives and jobs of our citizens," and stressed that "walls work and walls save lives."

In sharp contrast to the Democrats' response following the State of the Union address, President Trump opened the door to bipartisanship and compromise, encouraging his political opponents to set aside their differences and work together to solve the most important issues facing our country.

President Trump showed America that he is choosing greatness over partisan gridlock in Washington. Let's hope the Democrats are willing to do the same.
