TAMPA — Despite all their success with Baker Mayfield or maybe because of it, the Bucs will have to rebuild their offensive coaching staff. But how deep into rebuilding will they get?

Offensive coordinator Dave Canales is finalizing an agreement to become the Panthers’ next head coach. Quarterbacks coach Thad Lewis would be a strong candidate to replace Canales, but the Bucs may have some competition. The Raiders have asked permission to interview Lewis.

It’s uncertain which position Lewis would have on the Raiders staff under new head coach Antonio Pierce, but it likely would have to be as offensive coordinator or passing game coordinator.

Lewis, 36, is considered a rising star in NFL circles. He was promoted to quarterbacks coach with the Bucs this season.

What is the connection to the Raiders? Lewis was an offensive analyst for two seasons at UCLA and involved in the recruitment of Heiman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels, who eventually chose Arizona State before later landing at LSU. But Daniels and Lewis have remained in touch.

Daniels has talked about his close relationship with Pierce and Marvin Lewis, who is expected to join the Raiders staff.

The Raiders certainly have a need for a quarterback but own the No. 13 overall pick, which would seem to be way out of range for Daniels, who is projected to go anywhere from No. 3-5 overall.

Regardless, Lewis should also get credit for helping Mayfield restart his career the way Canales was lauded for the performance by Geno Smith in Seattle.

Mayfield set career highs for passing yards (4,044), touchdowns (28) and completion percentage (64.3).

Lewis threw for more than 10,000 yards as a quarterback at Duke and spent time in the NFL as a quarterback with the Rams, Browns, Lions, Bills, Texans, Eagles, 49ers and Ravens.

He was hired as an intern in 2020 with the Bucs and promoted to offensive assistant in 2021 before Todd Bowles made him the quarterbacks coach this season.
