BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Florida cornerback Vernon Hargreaves, a former Wharton standout, earned All-SEC first-team honors for the third straight season and Alabama placed seven players on the coaches' first team as the first and second teams were announced Tuesday. UF defensive tackle Jon Bullard and defensive back Jalen Tabor also made the first team, and linebacker Antonio Morrison and punter Johnny Townsend made the second team. The Tide first-teamers include Heisman Trophy finalist tailback Derrick Henry. Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott and South Carolina wide receiver/return man Pharoh Cooper were repeat first-teamers. Coaches aren't allowed to vote for their players. The league will release individual award winners today and the All-Freshman team on Thursday. MINNESOTA PROBE: The Gophers athletic department didn't know about inappropriate conduct by athletic director Norwood Teague before his resignation for sexual harassment, according to an external review that also found no fault with the department's "general climate" on sexual harassment. Teague stepped down in August after two high-ranking university administrators reported he sexually harassed them. The report, which cost $690,000, recommends improving response to sexual harassment and strengthening hiring procedures. A separate financial audit took issue with thousands in spending by department employees under Teague and made several recommendations for tighter controls. BIG 12: The conference will require football teams to play at least one non-conference game each season against a team from one of the other Power Five leagues or Notre Dame. The goal is to improve schedule strength for College Football Playoff consideration. BROYLES AWARD: Oklahoma offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley, 32, became the youngest winner of the honor for the nation's top assistant coach. Other finalists were Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables, Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, North Carolina defensive coordinator Gene Chizik and Baylor offensive coordinator Kendal Briles. BUTKUS AWARD: Notre Dame leading tackler Jaylon Smith won the award as the nation's top linebacker. Other finalists: Georgia's Leonard Floyd, LSU's Deion Jones, Ohio State's Raekwon McMillan and Alabama's Reggie Ragland. Eastern Kentucky: Tennessee assistant Mark Elder was named coach. He will stay with the Vols through the Outback Bowl. JACKSONVILLE: Ian Shields was announced as coach, four days after he resigned from Lenoir-Rhyne University. Shields is the third coach in program history, following Steve Gilbert (1998-2006) and former Gator standout Kerwin Bell (2007-2015). Bell's contract was not renewed. Before his two seasons at Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C., the former Oregon State quarterback spent five seasons as associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Army. UCF: Mario Verduzco was named quarterbacks coach. The 39-year coaching veteran was Missouri State's offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach this past season. Before that he spent 14 years at Northern Iowa.
