A woman who police say shot her daughter is dead after an officer-involved shooting early Sunday in the Palm River-Clair Mel area of Tampa.Hillsborough County sheriff’s deputies were responding to a call of a burglary in progress at a home in the 7500 block of Carolton Circle when they got word a woman in the house, who they described as a grandmother, had shot her daughter in the hand. Police went in and removed the daughter, who they say was acting erratically. They then moved to a back room in which the grandmother had barricaded herself, according to Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Joseph Maurer.Maurer said the woman ignored calls to drop her weapon, and when she raised it, was shot by Dep. Joshua Thomas. Thomas, Maurer said, has been with the sheriff’s office for 10 months, and before that was with Temple Terrace police for six years. This is his first use of deadly force, Maurer said. Two other people, who police described as a roommate and a grandchild, escaped the house unharmed. Police did not immediately release the names of anyone involved.Maurer called the incident a case of “domestic violence” and commended deputies for their work.“They rescued three people from a violent situation,” he said.Investigations into the original shooting and deputy-involved shooting are ongoing, police said.
